National Electronics Product Stewardship Initiative (NEPSI)

Abstract:The National Electronics Product Stewardship Initiative (NEPSI) was created to bring stakeholders together to develop solutions to the issue of electronic products management. NEPSI's main goal was the development of a system, including a viable financing mechanism, to maximize the collection, reuse, and recycling of used electronics, while considering appropriate incentives to design products that facilitate source reduction, reuse and recycling; reduce toxicity; and increase recycled content. NEPSI was the first national (U.S.) discussion among electronics manufacturers, state and local government agencies, recyclers, and non-governmental organizations. The products addressed in the dialogue were televisions, computer monitors, CPUs, laptops, and computer peripherals, such as printers. The NEPSI dialogue was coordinated by the University of Tennessee, which received funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
